    A dynamic ridesharing dispatch and idle vehicle repositioning strategy with integrated transit transfers

    We propose a ridesharing strategy with integrated transit in which a private on-demand mobility service operator may drop off a passenger directly door-to-door, commit to dropping them at a transit station or picking up from a transit station, or to both pickup and drop off at two different stations with different vehicles. We study the effectiveness of online solution algorithms for this proposed strategy. Queueing-theoretic vehicle dispatch and idle vehicle relocation algorithms are customized for the problem. Several experiments are conducted first with a synthetic instance to design and test the effectiveness of this integrated solution method, the influence of different model parameters, and measure the benefit of such cooperation. Results suggest that rideshare vehicle travel time can drop by 40-60% consistently while passenger journey times can be reduced by 50-60% when demand is high. A case study of Long Island commuters to New York City (NYC) suggests having the proposed operating strategy can substantially cut user journey times and operating costs by up to 54% and 60% each for a range of 10-30 taxis initiated per zone. This result shows that there are settings where such service is highly warranted

    A stochastic user-operator assignment game for microtransit service evaluation: A case study of Kussbus in Luxembourg

    This paper proposes a stochastic variant of the stable matching model from Rasulkhani and Chow [1] which allows microtransit operators to evaluate their operation policy and resource allocations. The proposed model takes into account the stochastic nature of users' travel utility perception, resulting in a probabilistic stable operation cost allocation outcome to design ticket price and ridership forecasting. We applied the model for the operation policy evaluation of a microtransit service in Luxembourg and its border area. The methodology for the model parameters estimation and calibration is developed.     Bayesian networks for constrained location choice modeling using structural restrictions and model averaging

    In this work, we propose a Bayesian network approach by using structural restrictions and a model averaging algorithm for modeling the location choice of discretionary activities. In a first stage, we delimit individuals’ location choice which is set by generating an ellipse that uses empirical detour factors and a home-work axis. The choice set is further refined by an individual’s space-time constraints in order to identify the constrained destination choice set. We use structural restrictions and a model averaging method to learn the network structure of the Bayesian network in order to predict the heuristics of individuals’ location selection. The empirical study shows the proposed method can effectively obtain Bayesian networks with a consistent dependency structure. The empirical study suggests activity schedule factors significantly influence location choice decisions

    Dans le cadre du projet de recherche MOBLOC (Mobilities and Long Term Location Choice in Belgium), l'exploration à un niveau d'agrégation communal des interactions entre les mobilités résidentielle et quotidienne a nécessité la construction d'un modèle d'accessibilité routière à l'échelle de la Belgique. Dans un premier temps, un modèle de trafic en heures creuses affectant les flux selon un mode tout-ou-rien, est comparé à une base d'observations (MOBEL) ainsi qu'à deux modélisations (Google Maps et un modèle développé à l'UCL par Vandenbulke et al., 2009). Le modèle routier aux heures de pointe du matin procède à l'affectation d'une matrice de demande de déplacement domicile-travail et domicile-études sur la base de la recherche d'un équilibre utilisateur.     A user-operator assignment game with heterogeneous user groups for empirical evaluation of a microtransit service in Luxembourg

    We tackle the problem of evaluating the impact of different operation policies on the performance of a microtransit service. This study is the first empirical application using the stable matching modeling framework to evaluate different operation cost allocation and pricing mechanisms on microtransit service. We extend the deterministic stable matching model to a stochastic reliability-based one to consider user's heterogeneous perceptions of utility on the service routes. The proposed model is applied to the evaluation of Kussbus microtransit service in Luxembourg. We found that the current Kussbus operation is not a stable outcome. By reducing their route operating costs of 50%, it is expected to increase the ridership of 10%. If Kussbus can reduce in-vehicle travel time on their own by 20%, they can significantly increase profit several folds from the baseline

    AbstractThermus thermophilus strain HB8 is known to have a heterodimeric aspartyl-tRNAAsn amidotransferase (Asp-AdT) capable of forming Asn-tRNAAsn [Becker, H.D. and Kern, D. (1998) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 95, 12832–12837]. Here we show that, like other bacteria, T. thermophilus possesses the canonical set of amidotransferase (AdT) genes (gatA, gatB and gatC). We cloned and sequenced these genes, and constructed an artificial operon for overexpression in Escherichia coli of the thermophilic holoenzyme. The overproduced T. thermophilus AdT can generate Gln-tRNAGln as well as Asn-tRNAAsn. Thus, the T. thermophilus tRNA-dependent AdT is a dual-specific Asp/Glu-AdT resembling other bacterial AdTs. In addition, we observed that removal of the 44 carboxy-terminal amino acids of the GatA subunit only inhibits the Asp-AdT activity, leaving the Glu-AdT activity of the mutant AdT unaltered; this shows that Asp-AdT and Glu-AdT activities can be mechanistically separated

    Understanding the role of contrasting urban contexts in healthy aging: an international cohort study using wearable sensor devices (the CURHA study protocol).

    BACKGROUND: Given the challenges of aging populations, calls have been issued for more sustainable urban re-development and implementation of local solutions to address global environmental and healthy aging issues. However, few studies have considered older adults' daily mobility to better understand how local built and social environments may contribute to healthy aging. Meanwhile, wearable sensors and interactive map-based applications offer novel means for gathering information on people's mobility, levels of physical activity, or social network structure. Combining such data with classical questionnaires on well-being, physical activity, perceived environments and qualitative assessment of experience of places opens new opportunities to assess the complex interplay between individuals and environments. In line with current gaps and novel analytical capabilities, this research proposes an international research agenda to collect and analyse detailed data on daily mobility, social networks and health outcomes among older adults using interactive web-based questionnaires and wearable sensors. METHODS/DESIGN: Our study resorts to a battery of innovative data collection methods including use of a novel multisensor device for collection of location and physical activity, interactive map-based questionnaires on regular destinations and social networks, and qualitative assessment of experience of places. This rich data will allow advanced quantitative and qualitative analyses in the aim to disentangle the complex people-environment interactions linking urban local contexts to healthy aging, with a focus on active living, social networks and participation, and well-being. DISCUSSION: This project will generate evidence about what characteristics of urban environments relate to active mobility, social participation, and well-being, three important dimensions of healthy aging. It also sets the basis for an international research agenda on built environment and healthy aging based on a shared and comprehensive data collection protocol

    Testing the paradox of enrichment along a land use gradient in a multitrophic aboveground and belowground community

    In the light of ongoing land use changes, it is important to understand how multitrophic communities perform at different land use intensities. The paradox of enrichment predicts that fertilization leads to destabilization and extinction of predator-prey systems. We tested this prediction for a land use intensity gradient from natural to highly fertilized agricultural ecosystems. We included multiple aboveground and belowground trophic levels and land use-dependent searching efficiencies of insects. To overcome logistic constraints of field experiments, we used a successfully validated simulation model to investigate plant responses to removal of herbivores and their enemies. Consistent with our predictions, instability measured by herbivore-induced plant mortality increased with increasing land use intensity. Simultaneously, the balance between herbivores and natural enemies turned increasingly towards herbivore dominance and natural enemy failure. Under natural conditions, there were more frequently significant effects of belowground herbivores and their natural enemies on plant performance, whereas there were more aboveground effects in agroecosystems. This result was partly due to the “boom-bust” behavior of the shoot herbivore population. Plant responses to herbivore or natural enemy removal were much more abrupt than the imposed smooth land use intensity gradient. This may be due to the presence of multiple trophic levels aboveground and belowground. Our model suggests that destabilization and extinction are more likely to occur in agroecosystems than in natural communities, but the shape of the relationship is nonlinear under the influence of multiple trophic interactions.

    Coupling activity-based modeling and life cycle assessment-a proof-of-concept study on cross-border commuting in Luxembourg

    According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in 2010 the transport sector was responsible for 23% of the total energy-related CO2 emissions (6.7 GtCO2) worldwide. Policy makers in Luxembourg are well-aware of the challenges and are setting ambitious objectives at country level for the mid and long term. However, a framework to assess environmental impacts from a life cycle perspective on the scale of transport policy scenarios, rather than individual vehicles, is lacking. We present a novel framework linking activity-based modeling with life cycle assessment (LCA) and a proof-of-concept case study for the French cross-border commuters working in Luxembourg. Our framework allows for the evaluation of specific policies formulated on the trip level as well as aggregated evaluation of environmental impacts from a life cycle perspective. The results of our proof-of-concept-based case study suggest that only a combination of: (1) policy measures improving the speed and coverage of the public transport system; (2) policy measures fostering electric mobility; and (3) external factors such as de-carbonizing the electricity mix will allow to counteract the expected increase in impacts due to the increase of mobility needs of the growing commuting population in the long term
